User Experience Design Approach

User Experience Design (UXD) ensures that experience matches expectation.

The value of UXD isn’t simply the beauty of the user interface, the efficiency of a business process, or ensuring proper system functionality. It's about striking a balance between user needs, organizational goals, and system function. And that balance must translate to better bottom-line results.

Mind Over Machines strikes this balance, giving you a system that delivers the results you need and people enjoy using.

We customize the process to fit your needs, but generally follow Discovery, Design and Delivery.

ONE: Discovery Phase
We learn about business requirements, users, and their work:

  • Background:
We start with marketing requirements or functional specification if you have them. Customer interviews, usability studies, and reviews of existing products help, too.
  • Interviews:
Different stakeholder groups can see the same project differently, so we like to speak with them.
  • User personas:
"Who'll use the site?" "What will they do with it?" We describe typical users and write usage scenarios. These are called personas and are related to scenarios and use cases.
  • Group design workshops:
Small groups of your staff discuss important tasks taken from the personas and then sketch possible solutions.

TWO: Design Phase
We develop design directions, mockups and prototypes:

  • Mockups and first prototypes:
We start with initial concepts for information architecture, navigation, and features.
  • Site map:
We outline the content structure and information architecture.
  • Interactive wireframe prototypes:
Interactive wireframe prototypes give you a feel for the product.
  • Review and refine:
Design reviews let you refine the prototypes.
  • Combine UI and visual design:
Visual design has progressed to where we can combine it with navigation and interactions.
  • Usability testing:
There's nothing like watching real users use your prototype.
  • Approved design:
Once we've met your requirements, we prepare a specification for construction.
